| Weiller & Williams is a family
owned and operated livestock health store. The business was purchased
by L.R. (Dick) Sobey in April of 1996 and he was joined by his wife
Nancy in late March 1997. Daughter, Melissa came on board as part
time help in the summer of 1999 and full time in 2003 along with
being the Wysong representative.
Dick comes from a cattle background and has worked and handled
cattle all his life. His father was a cattle buyer for Burns Foods
until he bought the business of Armstrong Commission in 1967.
Dick became a partner with his Dad in 1977 and continued to buy
and sell cattle until 1998 when his share of the livestock auction
building he helped develop was purchased. Since then his sole
business has been that of selling everything from seal replacements
for a syringe to livestock, canine, feline vaccines and health
products, Morand Handling Equipment, Petersen Waterers, Featherlite
trailers to your special order.
Dick has always had a love of horses and dreamed of having his
own and riding them amongst his cattle checking herd. That dream
became reality in 1997 with the purchase of a tough experienced
rope horse sorrel gelding named Snort. Now the herd has grown
and Dick has a few horses he is team roping on. His goal now is
to get good enough at his roping to start competing locally. When
not team roping he enjoys just riding and being around the horses.
He is able to take one of his own horses out to check his 163
cow/calf herd when they're out in pasture.
Nancy became involved with the business when she and Dick got
together. She has had dogs and horses all her life and showed
Arabs & Morgans very successfully in everything from halter
to trail. She thoroughly enjoys all aspects of riding and competitively
competes in barrel racing at jackpots and rodeos. She has been
blessed that Dick is willing to be her groom, coach, driver and
chief cook. Between rodeos and jackpots she tries to get to the
dog shows to exhibit their Boston Terrier.
Dick and Nancy are owned by their 2 German Shepherds, Rukker
and Toree and a Boston Terrier named Loti. And where you see Nancy,
Rukker is always close by. Rukker is the Walmart Greeter
at Weiller & Williams and more people ask about his absence
then Nancy's. He is a great babysitter and pacifier when
parents are in the store with their kids. They have even been
found sound asleep cuddled up to him under the counter. He is
always ready to show you where the cookie container is kept so
you can give him a treat.
Both Dick and Nancy are on the founding Committee of Winkler
Canvas Buildings present the Northern Lights Barrel Futurity &
Derby held annually in Hamiota and work hard to promote barrel
racing in Manitoba.
Melissa, Dick's oldest daughter loves working in the animal
health business and is busy taking night courses in business management,
holding an A average. Melissa is often out on the
road promoting and delivering Wysong Pet products and is getting
married in February of 2005.
Weiller & Williams has veterinarian Dr. Joe Meek on staff.
He graduated in 1964 and started his own mixed practice in Arborg
MB which he thoroughly enjoyed. In 1971 he joined the Manitoba
Horse Racing Commission as the Commission Veterinarian at Assiniboia
Downs and was hooked, it is a job which he still holds today and
loves with a passion. The welfare of the horse is his concern.
He deals with every incident on the track in a very fair and honest
way even if it causes a feather ruffling in upper management.
He is highly respected for his integrity. In 1972 he founded McPhillips
Animal Hospital which was a small animal practice. Following it's
sale he joined the Veterinary Services Branch of Manitoba Agriculture.
He started as the Chief Field Veterinarian and then was Acting
Director during his last 3 years. Dr. Meek left his government
position in 1994 and joined Dick in the spring of 1996.
Dr. Meek owns roughly 155 animals in his own cow/calf operation
so he is aware of your needs and concerns. He has years of experience
and a wealth of knowledge. If he doesn't have the answer
for you, he will get it. He explains things to you in the language
you can understand. He helps set up herd health programs and does
farm visits to assess same.
We, at Weiller & Williams strive to provide you with good
service and good prices. If we don't have it, ask us. We
will try to get it for you. Mistakes are made, that's life,
some are beyond our control, but if you have a problem, tell us,
so we can try to rectify it.
